Our environment

Since 1847, we have supported our partnership with the local environment everyday. From our vineyards to packaging and distribution, we implement a broad range of initiatives when making and distributing our wines to ensure we are supporting the environment we operate in. We also work hard at ensuring our partner vineyards, growers and suppliers are as dedicated as we are.

    We've been farming our land for over a century - it's our history and our future. Maintaining the long-term health of our vineyards is therefore a top priority. We manage the vineyards using sustainable viticultural methods with minimal intervention and are activeley reviewing our practices to reduce our environmental impact.

    of waste water is recycled/re‑used, we even take some of our water to Tanunda Golf Course to water the lawns

    In a single year our water consumption has been reduced by nearly 26%! There are many ways that we have worked to achieve this, including using drip irrigation and water monitoring devices when cultivating our land.

    of our energy comes from renewable sources

    We've reduced our energy consumption by 3.69% in 2013 but we know we need to go further which is why we've set ourselves an ambitous target of a 5% reduction in 2014.

  • Material

    We're placing eco-packaging design at the forefront of our environmental strategy, driving innovations that are helping us create lighter bottles and it's paying off.

    In 2013 we've reduced our packaging by6.9%

    10,000 tonnes fewer CO2e emissions, 3,000 tonnes less glass used, 200 fewer full vehicle delivery loads and we are recycling 96% of our solid and organic waste.

  • Native Vegetation

    hectares of native plantings to improve biodiversity

    For more than a decade we've been working to return the land along our creek to its native vegetation, replacing non-native plants and trees (including European plants that have been bought to South Australia) with indigenous greenery. This large scale project, which encompasses both our land holdings as well as adjacent sensitive ecological areas, is yielding results. Scores of native species of frogs, fish and waterbirds have returned to our flourishing ecosystems.

  • Jacob’s Creek Visitor Centre

    Our aim is to reduce energy use at the centre by up to 60% and for it to become self-sufficient and carbon neutral by 2020.

    We've installed large solar power trackers at the Jacob's Creek Visitor Centre, these can produce an impressive 220kWh per day! The trackers follow the sun wherever it is positioned, even on cloudy days, which increases their energy output by 40% compared with fixed solar panels. An impressive 46,263 kWh was produced by the solar panels in 2013.

  • Greenhouse Gas Calculator

    We've supported the development of a greenhouse gas calculator with the Winemakers Federation of Australia that identifies sources of emissions.
