7 tipsFor responsible drinking

1

Know the wine line

It's important to keep track of how much you are drinking.

Standard drink units are a reliable way of measuring this and are used by government to communicate recommendations on responsible drinking.

100ml = 1 standard drink
100ml of wine at 13% ALC/VOL is one standard drink.*

*This is the case in Australia but may vary in other countries.

2

Know your strength

A wine label will tell you the % ALC/VOL of the drink, in other words, how much alcohol is in it as a percentage of the total volume. The higher the ALC/VOL, the stronger the drink, so know the strength when you are calculating your standard drink!

3

Know your serve

Wine glasses come in many shapes and sizes can vary, so think about the size of your serve.

4

Know your limit

According to the australian national health & medical research council's guidelines:

Not drinking

For women who are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding, as well as young people under 18, the safest option is not to drink.

Casual drinking

Drinking no more than 2 standard drinks on any day reduces the lifetime risk of harm from alcohol-related disease or injury.

A special occasion

Drinking no more than 4 standard drinks on a single occasion can reduce the risk of alcohol-related injury.

5

Know your way home

Never drink and drive. Before you head out and have a drink, think about how you are going to get home. Whether it is public transport, calling a taxi, phoning a friend or relative or nominating a designated driver, it is important you know how you are going to get home.

6

Know how to pace

A glass of water between drinks is a good way to pace yourself and keep hydrated.

7

Know the perfect match

Pairing the right food and wine not only enhances the dining experience, but it can also slow down the absorption of alcohol.

But like all good things - moderation is key.
