OUR HISTORY

From the humble cottage of William Jacob set along the banks of a small creek to the legacy of the Gramp family, we have over 150 years of winemaking tradition flowing through our vineyards. It’s a heritage we are passionate about, and just as equally, what drives us to create new wines to be enjoyed for more years to come.

1840

A NEW NAME IN TOWN

William Jacob settled on the banks of a small creek In Rowland Flat, South Australia. This creek would later be named after him and become famous all over the world. His original cottage remains as a wonderful spot on the grounds of our Jacob’s Creek home.

1847

THE BAROSSA’S FIRST COMMERCIAL VINEYARD

Bavarian-born settler Johann Gramp planted the Barossa Valley’s first commercial vineyard on the banks of Jacob’s Creek. This was followed soon after with a small winery and underground cellar with the first wine made around 1850.

1912

A GRAMP FAMILY LEGACY

The Gramp family wine business flourished and is incorporated as G Gramp & Sons.

1947

100 YEARS OF WINEMAKING

What began as a 30-hectare vineyard had become one of Australia’s most famous wineries. To mark the event, a legendary celebration took place and a commemorative mulberry tree was planted at the place now known as Centenary Hill.

1994

RECOGNITION FROM ITS PEERS

The Gramp & Sons winery business celebrated 150 years by replanting new Riesling vines on the bank of Jacob’s Creek at the site of Johann Gramp’s original vineyard.

The World Association of Wine Writers and Journalists ranked our winery number one in the 2008 World’s 100 Best Wineries based on outstanding performance in international wine shows and competitions.
